Italian Dining Places - Mama Mia!

By Pollux Parker

Shaped by hundreds of years of social and political change, Italian cuisine has definitely come a long way since the discovery of the New World and the widespread trading of ingredients and spices. Traditional dishes that were once central to the regions are now finding its way to urban Italy, complete with delicious variations and modifications.

Here are some of the types of dining places you will find in Italy where you can enjoy the whole gamut of Italian food:

Trattoria - This is best when eating out with the wife and kids or with your closest friends. Oftentimes family-operated and with prices that will not hurt your pocket while keeping the atmosphere casual and relaxed.

Bar/Caffé - This is recommended if you're looking for a light meal. These serve coffee, juice, soda and alcoholic beverages from early morning until after-dinner hours. Usually serves sandwiches and paninis, as well, as side dishes.

Birreria - This is perfect for a night out with the boys, or for a nightcap after a long day of visiting tourist spots. They offer beers that are native to central and northern Italy.

Pizzeria - A must-visit if you want to try pizzas made the authentic way, where dough is baked on a traditional wood-fired pizza oven. Ask for the classic Margherita pizza which is topped with delicious mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes. Originally patterned after the colors of the Italian flag by the wife of Don Raffaele Esposito and named after Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889.

Spaghetteria - Originally started in Napoli, these kinds of establishments offer a variety of filling main courses and scrumptious pasta dishes such as puttanesca, spaghetti aglio, pesto and Bolognese.
